The Wedding March

Synopsis

In Vienna before the First World War, an aristocratic cavalry officer falls in love with an innkeeper's daughter. His family's financial troubles make a marriage to a wealthy industrialist's daughter increasingly attractive. The lovers' hopes collide with class expectations, family bargaining and the jealousy of the woman's violent fiancé.

Behind the scenes

Erich von Stroheim's expansive production was divided into The Wedding March and a second film, The Honeymoon. The surviving first film uses synchronized music and effects without spoken dialogue; The Honeymoon is now considered lost.
