Synopsis

A city swindler persuades Tillie to leave her father's farm with money he intends to steal. Once in town, he abandons her for his former girlfriend. News of a possible inheritance then renews his interest, and Tillie's effort to understand his intentions produces a succession of romantic reversals, elaborate parties and chaotic pursuits.

Behind the scenes

Marie Dressler brought a version of her stage role to this early feature-length slapstick production. Chaplin and Mabel Normand support her, with Chaplin playing a calculating opportunist rather than his more sympathetic Tramp.
