Synopsis

A country girl secretly sells family property to pay for the education of the boy she loves. He returns as a minister without knowing who made his studies possible and marries a more fashionable woman. The resulting household draws repeatedly on the overlooked girl's care, testing how long affection can endure without recognition.

Cast

Historical context

Lillian Gish's performance places quiet sacrifice at the centre of D. W. Griffith's rural melodrama. Clothing, education and domestic work become measures through which the characters misjudge one another's value.
