Synopsis

At midnight, three figures step out of paintings in a closed bookshop and open a collection of sinister stories. A disappearance, a vengeful hand, a concealed murder and a deadly card game turn ordinary encounters into threats. The same performers return in different roles as the tales move between horror and dark comedy.

Inspirations

Richard Oswald's anthology draws on writers including Edgar Allan Poe and Robert Louis Stevenson, alongside an original story of his own. Conrad Veidt, Anita Berber and Reinhold Schünzel play the framing figures and repeatedly change identities within the five episodes.
