Synopsis

A ranch foreman's concern for a new mother draws him into a dispute about her child's father. His foster brother and the family around the ranch have reasons to conceal the truth. Silence turns an act of help into a source of accusation and violence.

Luke Short's novel grounds the Western conflict in family obligations and sexual responsibility. Contemporary reviews recognised that these themes made it more complicated than routine adventure entertainment for children.
