Synopsis
Mary returns to the small town she left two years earlier and reopens a rivalry between two men from her past. One is embittered by her absence; the other offers attention backed by local influence. Plans for revenge develop around the railway station, turning a homecoming into a struggle against jealousy and criminal temptation.

Inspirations
Maritta Wolff wrote the source novel while still a university student. The adaptation substantially softened the book's sexual material to fit Hollywood's Production Code, changing the balance between its small-town setting and its more disturbing relationships.
Behind the scenes
Ava Gardner was borrowed from MGM for an important early leading role. The film belongs to the period in which she began moving beyond small parts toward the stardom consolidated by The Killers.
