Synopsis

In a Russian village on the eve of the First World War, two young women face sharply different forms of family authority. Anna enters an approved marriage, while Vasilisa openly chooses a partner against her father's wishes. War removes the young men from the village, leaving the women to confront violence, judgment and the possibility of social change.
