Synopsis
Five Confederate deserters attempt to cross the Florida Everglades and escape by sea to Cuba. Their journey brings heat, thirst and danger, but also exposes the rivalries and concealed motives within the group. With no dependable leader and little reason to trust one another, survival becomes a test of the men they have become.
Set in 1863, the film turns the Civil War into a confined survival drama away from the main battlefields. Its title uses a term for a deserter. The depiction of Seminole people follows the threatening-frontier conventions of its period and should be understood as part of the film's perspective.
