During the Civil War, raiders attack the horses and relay stations that connect California with the East. Bill Hickok is assigned to protect the route as a foreign agent exploits the disruption for his own plans. Historical context

Roy Rogers plays a fictionalized Hickok in an adventure that combines frontier legend with espionage. The Civil War supplies the background for a struggle over information and supplies, while musical performance keeps the film connected to Rogers's singing-cowboy persona.
