Synopsis

Prevented from marrying her childhood love, Diana eventually chooses another man, whose suicide on their honeymoon leaves her surrounded by suspicion. She refuses to explain what happened and acquires a scandalous public reputation. Years later, renewed contact with the man she first loved forces private loyalty and the damage of long-kept secrets into the same relationship.

Inspirations

Clarence Brown's film substantially changes details from Michael Arlen's controversial novel The Green Hat. The new title and altered circumstances show how the adaptation reshaped the source for an American studio release.
