Synopsis
Anna arrives in New York to stay with the father she has not seen since childhood. Life aboard his coal barge offers a chance to recover from difficult experiences she initially conceals. Falling in love with a rescued sailor makes a new beginning seem possible, but marriage would require her to confront both men's judgments about her past.
Cast
Inspirations
The film adapts Eugene O'Neill's play about estrangement, survival and the possibility of acceptance.
Behind the scenes
This English-language production introduced Greta Garbo in a talking role. MGM also made a separate German-language version; the two productions have different supporting casts and should not be treated as interchangeable audio tracks.
