Synopsis

Persuaded that military service will bring honour, Paul Bäumer and his classmates enlist in the German army. Training and life at the front dismantle their expectations, while friendship becomes a way to endure fear and loss. Returning home, Paul discovers another distance: the people still praising the war do not understand what the soldiers have experienced.

Cast

Inspirations

The film adapts Erich Maria Remarque's novel about the First World War. Its American production follows German soldiers, giving the antiwar story a viewpoint different from a conventional national victory narrative.

Behind the scenes

Separate sound and international versions were prepared during production. German veterans living in Los Angeles worked on the film as performers and technical advisers, connecting the staged action with experience of the war.
