Synopsis
A summer outing by young Ukrainian villagers ends under German aerial attack. As their community falls under occupation, families separate and resistance fighters organize in the surrounding countryside. A doctor's discovery of what the invaders are doing to local children turns the fight for survival into a desperate rescue effort.
Written by Lillian Hellman during the wartime alliance with the Soviet Union, the film presents an idealized village threatened by Nazi invasion. Its politics later became controversial in the United States. A re-edited version, Armored Attack, altered the opening and added Cold War commentary.
