Synopsis
Denied marriage to the woman he loves because he lacks money and rank, an army officer sets out to master the society that rejected him. Friendship with the Prince of Wales turns his wit and appearance into social authority. Maintaining that influence proves more difficult than gaining it when pride endangers the patronage on which it rests.
John Barrymore portrays the Regency fashion figure through Clyde Fitch's theatrical version of his life. The film uses biography as the basis for a romantic rise-and-fall drama, with Mary Astor as the woman connected to his early disappointment.
