Synopsis

Diana's lively public behavior conceals a sincere approach to love, while her more calculating friend Ann presents a respectable image. Both are attracted to the same wealthy young man, whose judgment favors appearances. Their competing performances of modern womanhood lead to marriages, jealousy and a party where the difference between reputation and conduct becomes difficult to hide.

Cast

Historical context

The film helped establish Joan Crawford's image within late-1920s youth culture. Its contrast between flamboyant behavior and private morality complicates the assumption that dancing, drinking and fashionable independence reveal a person's character.
