Synopsis
A plantation manager murders his employer and hopes to take his place beside the dead man's wife. A witness places a curse on him, and strange killings begin in the surrounding jungle. As his new wife notices his increasing withdrawal, an investigator must decide what connects the original crime to reports of a roaming beast.

Curt Siodmak wrote and directed the film, initially titled The Face in the Water. Raymond Burr plays the manager opposite Barbara Payton, with Lon Chaney Jr. as the investigator. Its transformation story combines guilt with the colonial exoticism common to jungle horror.
