Synopsis

A waiter presents himself as an important foreign official to impress a young woman. The deception wins him an invitation into her social circle, where a jealous rival has reasons to question his claims. His invented status becomes harder to maintain as the world of the party and the cabaret where he actually works move toward an encounter.

Behind the scenes

Mabel Normand wrote, directed and starred opposite Chaplin. The short places her established comic filmmaking practice alongside his early screen persona, with the contrast between work and social aspiration driving the imposture.
