Synopsis

Raised as the son of a wealthy Chinese merchant, Sam Lee faces racism despite his education and social position. A romance in France appears to offer escape, until the woman he loves learns the ancestry he has been reluctant to discuss.

Historical context

The adaptation of Rex Beach's novel addresses prejudice through a melodramatic identity plot. Its original Technicolor passage survives in monochrome form, so the source edition does not retain the original colour throughout.
