Synopsis

A successful fashion editor reaches a crisis and tries to leave her exhausting social and professional life behind. With a psychiatrist's encouragement, she starts again under another name and develops a new relationship. A killing connected to her former circle threatens the fragile independence she is trying to establish.

Inspirations

Edward Sheldon and Margaret Ayer Barnes's stage play became the basis of this account of a woman's attempt to rebuild her life.

Behind the scenes

Production Code objections delayed filming and forced revisions to affairs, family history and suggestions of murderous intent. Those negotiations are important to understanding why the finished film treats its protagonist's past through omissions and implication.
