Synopsis

A sailor's wedding is threatened when his future mother-in-law loses her money. His father, a practiced swindler, decides that another elaborate scheme can put everything right. Diamonds, an opera singer and competing romantic interests turn a family celebration into a rapidly expanding set of deceptions.

Cast

Behind the scenes

Animated material from Leon Schlesinger's studio interrupts the live-action comedy. Combined with moments that acknowledge the audience, this gives the film a playful freedom from ordinary realism and helps explain why some later critics valued its eccentricity more than its original reputation suggested.
