Synopsis
A reserved literary editor is sent to report on a violent incident and helps a threatened woman escape to Alaska. Her death leaves him responsible for her infant, while life in a frontier town gives him unexpected authority. The arrival of the man they fled forces him to confront the fear that still governs him.

Reception and legacy
