Synopsis

A solitary man living on a remote island helps a young woman escape an abusive employer. Their refuge attracts three criminals after the employer invents a story about hidden treasure. The arrival of the intruders forces the recluse to abandon his belief that remaining detached from other people can keep him safe.

Inspirations

Maurice Tourneur adapts Joseph Conrad's novel with Jack Holt, Seena Owen and Lon Chaney. Conrad lived to see this version, whose island setting turns a philosophy of withdrawal into an immediate struggle over responsibility and violence.
