Behind the scenes

An intended adaptation of a Sacha Guitry play ran into Production Code objections. The rewrites were substantial enough for the finished project to be credited as an original screenplay. Its globe-trotting atmosphere also drew on footage made for the earlier Trade Winds and on images of the 1939 New York World's Fair.
