Synopsis
Four soldiers survive a crash behind enemy lines and plan to escape by river. Their uncertain journey exposes fear, aggression and unstable ideas about the enemy. The unnamed war becomes a setting for psychological conflict rather than a reconstruction of a particular campaign.
Stanley Kubrick moved from magazine photography and short documentaries into feature directing with this independent production. Its deliberately unidentified conflict appeared during the Korean War but does not claim to portray that war's events.
