Synopsis
A criminal fleeing the consequences of a failed robbery discovers a doctor who looks almost exactly like him. One facial scar appears to be the only obstacle to taking over the man's life. The plan promises escape, but another person's identity brings responsibilities and dangers that the fugitive has not anticipated.

The screenplay adapts Murray Forbes's novel. Its identity-switch premise makes physical resemblance a trap rather than a source of freedom, developing the fatalistic possibilities of a familiar crime-story device.
Behind the scenes
Paul Henreid pursued the project as both actor and producer after his Warner Bros. contract. The gangster role offered a change from his established screen image. The film later circulated as The Scar, a title that foregrounds the physical detail around which its deception turns.
