Synopsis
After her family's financial collapse ends an expected aristocratic marriage, Clara accepts the proposal of a prosperous ironworks owner. She regards his humble origins with contempt, making their new household a continuation of the humiliation she hoped to escape. His conduct gradually challenges her judgment and the social values that made the rejected match seem superior.
