Synopsis

An encounter during a snowstorm introduces Count Vronsky to a woman who resists his advances. When he meets her again, she is Anna, the wife of a respected official and mother of a young son. Their growing attachment places her marriage, social standing and access to her child at risk in a world that gives the lovers unequal freedom.

Cast

Inspirations

MGM adapted Tolstoy's Anna Karenina around the established screen partnership of Greta Garbo and John Gilbert. The film reshapes the novel for that romantic pairing, rather than attempting to include the full range of Tolstoy's characters and social concerns.
