Synopsis
A woman trapped in a jealous businessman's marriage tries to end her relationship with the lawyer she loves. Her husband's surveillance and a younger admirer's attention make restraint difficult. An apparently innocent encounter turns violent, leaving private loyalties and the truth of what happened to be weighed under public suspicion.
Jacques Feyder directed Greta Garbo in a film released with synchronised music and effects but no spoken dialogue. Its position at the end of MGM's silent production places the restrained performances and visual storytelling beside the industry's rapid adoption of full sound.
