Synopsis
An aristocratic household is shipwrecked, leaving its members dependent on the practical abilities of their butler. On the island, inherited rank gives way to competence, and the woman who once dismissed him begins to imagine marriage. Rescue brings the group back to a society less willing to recognise the order they created for themselves.
Cecil B. DeMille adapts J. M. Barrie's The Admirable Crichton, with Gloria Swanson and Thomas Meighan. The film tests the apparent permanence of class distinctions by moving the same people between a luxurious household and a survival community.
