Synopsis

A count attached to the Austrian court falls in love with an organ grinder working in Vienna's amusement park. She does not know his rank, and he cannot easily escape the marriage expected of him. Their relationship is divided by class obligations and then by war, which changes the social world that kept them apart.

Cast

Behind the scenes

Universal removed Erich von Stroheim after filming had begun and appointed Rupert Julian to finish the picture. Disagreements over scheduling, expenditure and control make the film an important example of the conflict between a demanding director and studio management.
