Mockery

Synopsis

During the Russian Civil War, a hungry peasant agrees to protect a countess traveling with secret dispatches. Her kindness gives him an attachment he has never known, but her own future lies elsewhere. Class difference and revolutionary violence make their promises of friendship increasingly difficult to sustain.

Cast

Historical context

Benjamin Christensen directed Lon Chaney and Barbara Bedford in an American view of post-revolutionary Russia. The melodrama uses the peasant's devotion to expose the unequal meanings that an apparent bond can have for two people.
