Synopsis

A wealthy Chinese father raises his daughter between traditional expectations and a Western education. Her secret relationship with a young Englishman disrupts an arranged marriage and brings the families into conflict. The father's response turns his wounded authority into a plan for revenge against people who have underestimated its severity.

Inspirations

Lon Chaney plays two generations of the Wu family in this adaptation of a 1913 play. The white actor's portrayal and the story's imagined cultural rules reflect Hollywood's racial impersonation and exoticism, even as the narrative also depicts the visiting English family's prejudice.
