Synopsis

An orphan grows up among carnival performers under the care of a good-hearted confidence man. A booking brings them to the town where her wealthy grandparents live, unaware of her identity. When a romance provokes the local judge's hostility, her guardian must prove who she is before the law separates the improvised family.

Cast

Inspirations

D. W. Griffith adapted the stage musical Poppy with W. C. Fields repeating the kind of showman role closely associated with him. The tension between respectable ancestry and a supposedly disreputable guardian gives the comedy its emotional centre.
