Synopsis
A desperate father commits a robbery to obtain money while his daughter lies critically ill. A detective follows him to the family's apartment, where his wife takes control of the weapon and refuses to let anyone leave before the child survives the night. The cramped room becomes a temporary suspension of pursuit, forcing duty and compassion into immediate contact.

Historical context
Ozu begins with the movement and shadows of a crime thriller before concentrating the conflict inside a family home. The child's condition gives the standoff a different deadline from the one imposed by police pursuit.
