Synopsis
Two American brothers approach the war differently: Ralph enlists, while James hopes to avoid separation from his cabaret-performer sweetheart. Military service eventually brings them together in France. Their romantic attachments and a French family's old political loyalties become part of a story about the war's demands on private life.

Historical context
Released after the armistice, Griffith's drama joins battlefield rescue to a patriotic reconciliation at home. Its treatment of a former Confederate living in France extends that reconciliation to an older American conflict.
