Synopsis

Nanette's romance in a small Canadian community is interrupted by the First World War. She becomes a Red Cross nurse and travels into the conflict in Europe, where a threatening German officer puts her in danger. The story links separation, sacrifice and rescue with large battle scenes and a strongly partisan image of the enemy.

Historical context

The film was produced as wartime propaganda. Erich von Stroheim's brutal officer exemplifies its demonizing portrayal of Germans, which is part of the film's persuasive strategy rather than an impartial account of the conflict.
