The Marriage of the Bear

Synopsis

A countess's frightening encounter with a bear becomes the explanation offered for her son's disturbing behavior. As he grows, the young aristocrat's violence and identification with the animal unsettle those around him. Marriage appears to promise a return to ordinary life, but the wedding exposes the danger concealed beneath that expectation.

Inspirations

The film adapts Anatoly Lunacharsky's play, itself drawn from Prosper Mérimée's Lokis. Its horror leaves room for uncertainty between an actual transformation and a human being acting under a destructive belief.
