Synopsis

On New Year's Eve, the dying Salvation Army worker Edit asks to see David Holm, a man whose drinking has devastated his family. David refuses, then a fight in a graveyard brings him face to face with a spectral carriage. Its driver forces him to revisit the suffering he has caused, while the night offers a final chance to change.

Cast

Historical context

Made during Swedish silent cinema's golden age, the film brings a ghost story into a world of poverty, tuberculosis and domestic violence. David's family and Edit's mission give the supernatural journey an immediate human cost.

Inspirations

Victor Sjöström adapted Selma Lagerlöf's 1912 novel Körkarlen. The story uses the legend of Death's coachman to explore responsibility and redemption; it is a literary adaptation, not a reconstruction of a documented event.

Behind the scenes

Sjöström directs and plays David. Julius Jaenzon's layered exposures make the carriage and its passengers transparent within physical settings. The production used the new Filmstaden studios, while flashbacks nested inside other flashbacks gradually reveal David's past.

Reception and legacy

The film became an enduring reference for Ingmar Bergman, who later cast Sjöström in Wild Strawberries. Its combination of intimate acting, supernatural imagery and a complex treatment of memory remains central to its reputation.
