Synopsis
A breakdown brings a returning drifter back to the industrial town where he grew up. Two childhood companions now occupy positions of wealth and authority, but their success rests on a secret from the past. His arrival unsettles their marriage and draws a woman with troubles of her own into a network of guilt and fear.
Robert Rossen adapted John Patrick's story Love Lies Bleeding. Its long reach from childhood into adult power and guilt gives the crime drama a structure built around an event that refuses to stay in the past.
The film introduced Kirk Douglas to cinema in a vulnerable role quite different from many of his later tough characters. During a brief absence by Lewis Milestone in support of a decorators' strike, Byron Haskin directed without screen credit.
