Synopsis

Letty leaves Virginia for an isolated Texas ranch, hoping to find security with her cousin's family. The relentless wind and an increasingly hostile household leave her dependent on men whose offers of protection carry expectations of their own. Forced into an unwanted marriage, she struggles to retain control of her life in a landscape that seems to invade every private space.

Cast

Inspirations

Frances Marion adapts Dorothy Scarborough's novel, with Lillian Gish working again under Victor Sjöström. Wind and blowing sand act as more than background, giving visible form to the pressures surrounding Letty.
