Synopsis

An English aristocrat leaves his country under suspicion of misusing a charitable fund and begins again in Wyoming. There he forms a family with Nat-U-Ritch, a Ute woman who has protected him from danger. News that could restore his former position arrives as a local investigation threatens the life they have built together.

Cast

Inspirations

The film adapts Edwin Milton Royle's stage play, retaining its melodramatic conflict between English inheritance and an American frontier family. The original title contains a derogatory term for an Indigenous woman.

Behind the scenes

Cecil B. DeMille shared directing duties with Oscar Apfel on his first film assignment. The production was an early milestone in the development of feature filmmaking in Hollywood.
