Within Our Gates

Synopsis

After a broken engagement, a young Black woman returns to the South and helps a school facing closure. A fundraising journey north brings new relationships and exposes contrasting attitudes toward education and racial equality. Her efforts gradually reveal a past shaped by violence whose consequences reach far beyond her own family.

Cast

Historical context

Oscar Micheaux addresses racism, unequal schooling and lynching through a Black protagonist's experience. Often discussed as a response to The Birth of a Nation, the film challenges that work's racial mythology. Long thought lost, it survived through a print discovered in Spain.
