Synopsis
A wealthy officer's daughter receives privileged treatment at a boarding school until news of his financial ruin transforms her position. Forced into domestic service, she finds companionship with another neglected girl and uses imagination to endure their surroundings. An unexpected kindness from a neighbouring household opens a path toward discovering what really happened to her family.
Frances Marion adapted Frances Hodgson Burnett's novel for Mary Pickford and director Marshall Neilan. The story contrasts the school's treatment of the same child before and after the loss of money, making social status an explicit measure of adult hypocrisy.
