Synopsis

A spirited girl grows up in a mining town with a father whose fortune has disappeared. A persistent schoolteacher persuades her to try the classroom, opening a new possibility in her unsettled life. Meanwhile, news of money elsewhere in the family attracts people willing to exploit the connections she scarcely understands.

Frances Marion adapted Bret Harte's frontier story for Mary Pickford and director Marshall Neilan. The rough mining settlement gives Pickford's rebellious heroine a setting where affection and education compete with the pursuit of inherited wealth.
