Synopsis

Stella grows up protected from unhappiness by wealthy guardians, while the orphan Unity experiences neglect and violence. Their lives become connected through a journalist trapped in a troubled marriage. As Stella begins to discover the world beyond her room, Unity's gratitude and longing reveal how differently the two young women understand the same man's attention.

Cast

Behind the scenes

Mary Pickford plays both Stella and Unity in Frances Marion's adaptation of William J. Locke. Differences in posture, expression and appearance make the dual role central to the contrast between sheltered privilege and the effects of hardship.
