Synopsis
Rotten food and brutal discipline push the sailors of a Russian battleship toward mutiny. Their revolt reaches the people of Odessa, where public mourning turns into solidarity and confrontation. The story moves between individual faces and collective action, making the ship and the city part of the same struggle against imperial authority.
Cast
Historical context
The film dramatizes the 1905 Potemkin mutiny as part of a Soviet commemoration of the revolution of that year. Its political viewpoint shapes both the selection of events and the way they are staged.
Behind the scenes
Eisenstein builds tension through montage: details of bodies, machinery and crowds acquire force through their arrangement. The Odessa Steps sequence became a widely studied and imitated example of this method.
