Strike

Synopsis

Suspicion and anger spread through a factory after a worker is falsely accused of theft. A walkout briefly gives the workforce a sense of collective strength, but hunger, surveillance and pressure from management test their unity. Eisenstein presents the conflict through the group rather than a single hero, building toward a violent confrontation.

Cast

Historical context

Eisenstein's first feature grew from his work in experimental theatre and a proposed cycle about the revolutionary movement. It presents labour conflict from an openly pro-revolutionary perspective.

Behind the scenes

The editing connects people, objects and animal imagery to sharpen the conflict. Its famous climactic cross-cutting treats the juxtaposition of images as an argument, not simply as a way to follow simultaneous action.
