Synopsis

An accountant accidentally brings home a dog that his wife assumes is an anniversary present. Several criminal groups want the animal, and every attempt to resolve the misunderstanding makes him look more suspicious. A domestic oversight expands into a farce involving police, gangsters and relatives who already doubt his judgment.

Behind the scenes

George Beck's screenplay was reportedly written in four days and initially conceived for Cary Grant. Its eventual pairing of Farley Granger and Shelley Winters gives the mistaken-identity comedy a different cast from the one first imagined.
