Synopsis
A wealthy man offers five strangers a substantial reward for spending one night in a supposedly haunted house. The doors will be locked, weapons are handed out and the host's marriage is already a battlefield. Frightening apparitions soon make it difficult to distinguish a supernatural threat from a carefully arranged human trap.

Behind the scenes
William Castle extended the scares into some cinemas with Emergo, a publicity device that sent a skeleton over the audience. The house's interiors were largely studio sets, and works from Vincent Price's art collection helped decorate them. Limited theatrical engagements began in December 1958, ahead of the film's better-known 1959 run.
