Synopsis
An innkeeper refuses to let his cheerful younger daughter marry until her difficult older sister has found a husband. The suitor who wants the younger woman searches for a way around that condition. His friend's advice leads toward a scheme in which courtship, marriage and deliberately provoked hostility become instruments for changing the sisters' prospects.

Inspirations
Lubitsch relocates the pattern of The Taming of the Shrew to a rural German comedy. Henny Porten plays both sisters, allowing contrasting behavior and costume to make two very different characters from the same performer.
